Your kids eat what?!

Would you believe it if I said there was a 4 year old boy in Omaha who loved hummus, peas and cottage cheese, snacked on tomato and cucumber salads and begged for zucchini bread? I read about this story in USA Today. I then found out this little 4-year-old boy didn’t initially like vegetables. He is apart of an initiative many schools are participating in: teaching gardens.

Kids are excited to plant, grow, harvest and cook the vegetables from their own backyard. Giving kids ownership whether it’s in the garden or in the kitchen can go a long way. Studies have shown that kids who garden or help in the kitchen are more likely to try new foods, even if they don’t end up liking them.

Here's a great guide for starting your own home-grown family garden. Of course, if you don’t have the time or space for a full vegetable garden, you can easily start your own herb garden and enjoy fresh herbs year-round that your whole family can grow and enjoy! And when everything grows you can use them to make some great dishes like this broccoli-carrot bake.
