What you DON'T eat could hurt you!

We know we should limit calories, salt, sugar, alcohol, etc., but what about the foods we aren't eating? Could those missing foods be hurting us?

The Center for Science in the Public Interest publishes the largest circulating health and nutrition newsletter in America, Nutrition Action Healthletter. The September issue cover story identifies 4 nutrients Americans aren't getting enough of and that could potentially improve our health. The catch? As we learn more about nutrition we are discovering that nutrients from food actually may help us better than popping supplements.

Hmmm.... how can Market Street help? Check out the nutrients Americans need more of and how you can fulfill those needs with our hot sales this week.

What are the 4 nutrients?

Potassium - Potassium from food may help manage blood pressure, prevent kidney stones and osteoporosis. Not sure where to get it? How about fresh fruits and vegetables OR yellow-fin tuna, which provides about 14% of your daily needs. On sale at Market Street for $15.99/lb

Vitamin D - Vitamin D helps our body absorb calcium and potentially reduce the risk of fractures. Newer research indicates Vitamin D may lower the risk of colon cancer, heart attacks, stroke, type 2 diabetes, falls and some autoimmune diseases. Where do we get vitamin D? Besides the sun, include low-fat milk, cod liver oil, salmon or mackerel in your diet. Eating 3 oz of cooked shrimp provides 1/3 of your days need for vitamin D. On sale at Market Street for $5.99/31-40 count.

Magnesium - Magnesium may be helpful in preventing type 2 diabetes. Look for magnesium in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans. Guess what? Yellow-fin tuna not only provides potassium but magnesium too? Double bang for your buck!! On sale at Market Street for $15.99/lb.

Vitamin B-12 - Low vitamin B-12 is common for older adults and some vegetarians/vegans. It is found in dairy, eggs, fish, poultry and meat. Older adults begin to lose the ability to remove B-12 from their food sources. The problem can be very complicated and involve having too much folic acid from fortified foods. Aim to get your B-12 and folic acid from real foods. Whole chickens on sale at Market Street for $0.59/lb.
