Saving Pennies and Pounds (Nov 17)

Let the countdown continue... Thanksgiving is 8 days from today. You may remember from last week's blog that I'm a first-time Thanksgiving host this year, so I'm more tuned in to Market Street sale items and what needs to be purchased ahead of time. In my effort to save a little money and to spread out my shopping expense, I have been buying a little each week. Last week I purchased most of my shelf-stable items. Check out what I'm buying on sale this week.

  • Fresh Cranberries (2 bags for $3) OR Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce ($0.99/can)
  • Swanson Chicken Broth (32 oz carton for $1.79) - Consider the reduced sodium chicken broth. This is one place to save yourself some sodium without compromising taste.
  • Pepperidge Farm Stuffing Mix (2 for $5) - If you are making your own stuffing, wait till the week of Thanksgiving to buy your bread.
  • Sugary Sam Canned Sweet Potatoes (2-29 oz cans for $3)
  • Ellis Pecans (2 for $6)
  • Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk ($1.79/can)
  • Pet Evaporated Milk ($0.99/can)
  • Handi Foil Traditional Foil Pans (Buy One Get One Free select pans)
  • Turkey Thermometer ($1.99) - important for food safety
  • Del Monte Canned Vegetables (2 for $1) - Look for canned vegetables with less salt. Food Club makes a No Salt Added Green Bean.
  • Food Club Butter (2 for $4)
  • Philadelphia Cream Cheese (4 for $5) - Consider the 1/3 less fat cream cheese. You'll never know it's light.
Tomorrow I'm going to share my recipe for Grown Up Green Bean Casserole and Friday, Homemade Cranberry Chutney.

What will be on your Thanksgiving table from Market Street? Not sure you want to cook? Take advantage of Market Street's prepared Holiday Meals. I had one last year and my family licked the containers clean!
