Tuesday Trade Up: Healthy Doesn't Always Mean The Best

Did you know that the word "healthy" is an FDA regulated word with specific criteria? While using the word "healthy" on a product's package might be helpful at first glance, it doesn't always tell the full story.

By now, we know not to rely solely on front-of-package labeling. What we can rely on is objecitve information that literally compares apples-to-apples. NuVal takes the guess work out of front-of-package labels and provides just the nutrition facts of a product. Higher scores mean the product has better nutrition. NuVal scores are then placed on the right hand side of price tags for easy comparison.

This week we take a look at a product with the word "healthy" in its name. While it may be healthy based on criteria, is it the best pick on the aisle? Let's take a look.

Chicken of the Sea Healthy Select Light Tuna NuVal = 53
Chicken of the Sea Chunk White Tuna in Water with 50% Less Sodium NuVal = 87

So this week's Trade Up Winner is actually the Tuna without "healthy" in the name. In fact, the 50% less Sodium Chunk White Tuna is a Dietitian's Top Pick.

  2. NuVal rocks. Terribly disappointed none of my area grocers subscribe, nor do they seem interested, but I'm very much looking forward to the upcoming NuVal mobile app, so I can do my own scanning.
