Trade-Up with NuVal for a Chance to Win a $50 Market Street Gift Card

Question: How can you tell which team has won a basketball game?
Answer: Whoever has the highest score when time runs out.

When we look at the final score of a game it does not tell us how many freethrows, three pointers, time outs, technical fouls or injuries occurred. It just gives us the summary of the game. This is the same for NuVal.

What is NuVal? NuVal is a nutrition scoring program available at Market Street, United Supermarkets and Amigos. It is one simple number, 1-100 right on the price tag, that lets you know the summary of all the nutrition, both the good and the not-so-good.

The "96" on the price tag is the NuVal score. Find
NuVal scores on over 15,000 items in our stores.

How is a score calculated? NuVal scores incorporate more than 30 factors including carbohydrate, protein and fat content, as well as the quality of the nutrients, like omega 3's, bioflavenoids, vitamins and minerals, Not-so-healthy components, such as trans fats, saturated fats, cholesterol, sugar, and sodium are also factored into the NuVal score. The higher the number, the better the nutrition.

How much influence does Market Street have on the NuVal scores? The short answer: we don't have any say. NuVal scores are calculated by an independent team from the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. This means that manufacturers, vendors, and retailers cannot influence the score.

What scores should I be looking for? There is no perfect score. The whole purpose of NuVal is to help you Trade Up. Can you Trade Up from a cereal with a score of 18 to a cereal with a score of 25? It would be nearly impossible to eat a perfect 100 in every category. In fact, some categories (like candy, cheese, and meat) can't receive a 100 because they don't have fiber. That's okay, remember, it's about Trading Up. It's kinda like Trading Up from a rookie basketball player to LeBron James.

Below are some of our most popular Trade Ups over the last year.

  1. NuVal helps with about 90% of our food purchases. It's also a good way to try new things you wouldn't normally eat. I traded up for Full Circle Black Bean Salsa (NuVal 47) from Pace Picante (NuVal 16)!!!

  3. I love yogurt! I recently got into the greek yogurt craze and finally decided to trade up from Chobani greek yogurt with mango (Nuval 25) to Fage Original Greek Yogurt (Nuval 91) and I add my own fresh or frozen mango and a little honey. The taste is great and I feel good knowing it has a higher score!

  5. I like that I can find the NuVal scores for meat and seafood in the stores easily now. I like comparing the different meats like chicken to beef and then even comparing the different types within one meat, like chicken tenders to chicken wings.

  9. I love shopping at United with NuVal! It's such a practical way to eat and cook healthier. The point system helps me stay in the vegetable and fruit isles instead of drifting to my favorites -- bread and tortillas.

NuVal is just like my experience at United -- helpful!

For instance, who knew that pork tenderloin was the best choice?!?!?! This girl didn't! I looked for lean chops, but was blown away by knowing about tenderloin!!!
I know poke around in the meat just to compare for fun!!

    1. We are so glad you found the NuVal scores in the meat department helpful. Many people think that since meat scores are lower than other departments it isn't healthy but meat doesn't have fiber so it can't get a high NuVal score. I'm glad you Traded Up! That's what it's all about.

-Alicia Jerome recently she explained the Noval score and I absolutely loved the tag with dietitian's top picks, and did you know about the one and black shelves in the store. Thanks so much for making healthier choices much easier without the guesswork. My tradeup using the Nuval score is Sunsweet dried apicots 91 and not the sunsweet dried mangos of a score of 8, no candy for me. Just nutrition all the way!!!
