Tuesday Trade Up: Avocados vs. Guacamole Dip

February is National Heart Month, in honor of Heart Month all of our Trade Up Tuesday blog post will focus on heart healthy foods! To kick off the month we are trading up fresh avocados with a NuVal of 89 in place of a guacamole dip with a NuVal of 24. Fresh avocados are not only a good source of vitamins and minerals like folate and potassium they are also a great source of heart healthy unsaturated fat. The potassium in avocados will help regulate your blood pressure and the healthy fats (mono-unsaturated fat) can help lower your cholesterol and decrease your risk for heart disease!

Trading up from the Guacamole Dip to a fresh avocado means that you cut sodium by 170mg and calories by 40. Not to mention you cut your fat in half as well.

Try snacking on this: 2 Tbsp fresh avocado chopped up like guacamole and spread on 5-6 pita chips.

Fresh Avocado: Serving Size 2 Tbsp, Calories 50, Total Fat 4.5g, Sat Fat 0.5g, Cholesterol 0mg, Sodium 0mg, Total Carb 3g, Fiber 2g, Protein 0g.

Deans Dip: Serving Size 2 Tbsp, Calories 90, Total Fat 9g, Sat Fat 2.5g, Cholesterol < 5mg, Sodium 170mg, Total Carbs 2g, Fiber 0g, Protein 1g.
