What's New: Free Spring Break Nutrition Learning Pieces for Kids

Next week is Spring Break and that means that your kids are going to be with you 24 hours a day! Do you have activities planned?

At Market Street, your dietitians are ready to help. We believe that grocery shopping can be a fun AND educational experience. Shopping for food can teach kids about the colors of the rainbow, where fruits and vegetables come from, how to find the best nutrition for the lowest price and so much more.

We've put together some FREE downloadables that your kids can use this week when you shop at Market Street.

1. Nutrtition Bingo
Kids can bring their Bingo sheet to the store and find matching products. Each time they find the product, they mark it off. When they get 4 in a row (going up, down or diagonal) they get BINGO. Kids are encouraged to find products with the matching NuVal scores however, younger kids can just look for the basic items like: tortillas, strawberries.

2. Grocery Shopping Math
Older kids can learn about budgeting, getting the best price and how to multiply price per pound. Kids are given a budget of $15 and a list of items to find and calculate. It will keep your kids focused and busy.

3. Market Street Trade Ups
Perhaps you are familiar with NuVal, but what about your kids? Download this activity sheet and let kids find the NuVal scores of specific products in the store. After they have found all the NuVal scores they practice their math skills by circling the items with higher NuVal scores. It's nutrition and math all in one game.

4. Parts of the Plant
Do your kids know where potatoes grow or where they'd pick berries from? This fun activity sheet, from Noursih Interactive teaches kids about the parts of the plants and what parts of the plant we eat (broccoli, celery, tomato, potato, etc). Don't worry, there's an answer key, just in case you're a little fuzzy on where an onion grows.
