Dietitian's Top Pick: Quinoa



Do you know how to pronounce quinoa? More importantly have you tried quinoa? Our Dietitian's Top Pick for today is Arrowhead Mills Organic Quinoa. With a NuVal score of 82 it is one of the better scoring grains that you can choose.

Here's some interesting facts about quinoa:

  • The protein content of quinoa per 100 calories is higher than brown rice, potatoes, barley and millet.
  • Quinoa is a good source of dietary fiber and phosphorus and is high in magnesium and iron.
  • The United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 as the "International Year of Quinoa" in recognition of ancestral practices of the Andean people, who have preserved quinoa as food for present and future generations.



  • The word "quinoa" is pronounced "KEEN-wah." It comes from the Spanish word, quinua, which itself comes from the word "kinwa" or "kinua" in the Quechua dialect.
  • Because people typically consume quinoa in the same way they consume oats, pasta, barley, rye, rice it is grouped with those foods in the grocery store but quinoa is not a cereal grass at all, but rather a member spinach, Swiss chard, and beets family.
  • Quinoa is easy to cook. Use one cup quinoa to two cups liquid (water, orange juice, vegetable/chicken broth, etc) in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat to simmer and cover for about 15 minutes.
