Trade Up Tuesday: Popcorn and Soda (Diabetes Friendly)

It’s the time of year when snuggling up on the sofa with a warm blanket and watching a movie is a perfect way to spend a crisp fall evening.  To help complete the night, maybe you’d like to include popcorn and a soda.  But those can add up to a lot of calories!  Let’s find a way to make this snack fit in your day by once again turning to NuVal as a guide.

Let’s start with the popcorn.  A bag of Fit Parmesan and Herb Popcorn has a NuVal score of 26, which is a trade up from a cheddar popcorn which only has a score of 13.  Since nutrition facts labels are based on weight, not volume, you get more popcorn per serving with the Fit Popcorn.  The Fit Popcorn has a shorter and simpler ingredients list, less fat and less calories.

Now let’s look at cream soda.   A regular cream soda has a Nuval score of 1.  Trading up to Zevia cream soda, the NuVal score increases to 22.  Zevia is much lower in calories and carohydrates when compared to the A&W soda.
