3 benefits of dairy that you may not have known

As we celebrate National Dairy Month we want to show you 3 ways dairy can improve your health that you may not have known.

1. You can begin to bust high blood pressure at breakfast
  • Potassium is a mineral in milk that can regulates fluid balance and can help maintain a healthy blood pressure
  • Tip: Use milk instead of water in your oatmeal

2. You can whittle your waist at lunch
  • A 12-week study of 34 obese adults on a balanced, modestly reduced-calorie diet found that those who consumed a calcium-rich diet supplied by 3 servings of yogurt a day lost 22% more weight, 66% more body fat and 81% more trunk fat compared to those who simply reduced calories and consumed little or no dairy. (Int J of Obesity, 2005)
  • Tip: Add a cup of yogurt or a piece of string cheese to your lunch

3. Dairy can offer positive post exercise nutrition
  • Emerging research shows that drinking milk, unflavored or chocolate, after a workout may be as effective as some commercial sports drinks in helping the body recover and rehydrate from exercise. (J Int Sport Nutr, 2008)
  • The protein in milk is easily digested and may enhance the repair of muscles so that you can recover faster.
  • Grab a portable milk or a smoothie made with milk and your favorite fruit of the season.
  • Tip: Horizon Organic Tetra Pak individual milks are portable and don’t require refrigeration before opening

Research shows the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan, a balanced eating plan that includes two to three servings of dairy foods and eight to ten servings of fruits and vegetables, may help lower blood pressure and improve your weight. (National Dairy Council)
